Cres is one of the islands in the Kvarner group of islands. The island of Cres is said to have been inhabited during the Neolithic age and the proof of this are the old fort settlements on inaccessible hilltops, surrounded by a circular stone wall that dates back to the Bronze Age. The oldest inhabitants of the island of Cres are supposed to be the Liburnians. It was under Italy from 1918 to 1943 and was officially declared to be under Croatia in 1945.
